AI and Mental Health: Conversations on Good Hope FM

I recently joined Bradley Knight for two discussions on Good Living on Cape Town's Good Hope FM, exploring the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in mental healthcare and its implications for psychological wellbeing.

Our conversations considered how people are increasingly turning to AI platforms such as ChatGPT for mental health information, emotional support, advice and assistance with everyday psychological challenges. While these technologies offer new opportunities for accessible information and support, they also raise important questions about their reliability, limitations and potential effects on mental health.

We also explored some of the psychological considerations associated with conversational AI, including emotional reliance, reassurance seeking, and the ways in which interactions with these systems may influence human relationships and psychological wellbeing.

Another focus was the emerging use of AI among psychologists and other healthcare professionals, particularly for administrative support, clinical documentation and practice management. Although AI offers considerable opportunities to reduce administrative demands, its application in direct clinical care requires appropriate safeguards, professional oversight and careful consideration of the available evidence.

These discussions reflect an important and rapidly developing area of mental healthcare, where technological innovation needs to be considered alongside psychological science, clinical responsibility and the complexities of human behaviour.
